Green Lancaster is part of LUSU involve, the volunteering section of the Students’ Union. We aim to promote environmental awareness, understanding and responsibility by providing unique, inspiring and practical environmental volunteering opportunities for students and young people in the Lancaster area.
Based on-campus at Lancaster University, we run volunteer projects that make positive changes to the local environment, as well as informing people how they can become part of the solution to the global problems of climate change and environmental degradation.
We work closely with numerous stakeholders on- and off-campus to engage young people in a variety of environmental-themed projects.
Over the past year, Green Lancaster has helped LUSU to improve its environmental and ethical performance. This has been recognised by the Union being awarded the Gold Standard by the NUS in the Green Impact Awards for two years running; being categorised as Highly Commended for the Carbon Competition in 2009 and then in 2011 winning a Green Gown Award in the Student Initiative and Campaigns category for the Exodus Project,
being recognised as Highly Commended in the Red Rose Resource Awards, and also being recognised as Highly Commended in the Incredible Edibles Awards.
All our projects fall under at least one of the following categories:
- ENERGY- promoting efficient use of energy and highlighting renewable alternatives to carbon-intensive energy sources

- RECYCLING – helping to reduce non-recyclable waste and increasing rates of reduction, reuse and recycling

- TRANSPORT – promoting sustainable forms of transportation

- ENVIRONMENT – enhancing the local natural environment, for the benefit of nature and local communities

- INFORMATION – informing people of the ways in which they can adopt sustainable lifestyles that will help to reduce their individual and collective impact on the local and global environment

Volunteering with any of our projects counts towards gaining the Lancaster Award!
